Subject: John Wayne's "Swing out, Sweet Land" and Bonanza

Someone else posted a link to an excerpt from "Swing Out, Sweet Land", originally seen in 1970. I found the whole show and watched it. It seemed as if all of "Star Trek's" main characters appeared on Bonanza at one time with the notable exception of William Shatner. I was delighted to see he actually shared a stage with Lorne Greene in this episode, along with Ross Martin of "The Wild, Wild West" But Lorne Greene did not look at all well. He kept dabbing a napkin to his lips, appeared to have difficulty getting up from his chair, and his lips looked blue. Was he having problems at this time? William Shatner, on the other hand, looked great with, of course, his inimitable acting style.

I always wished William Shatner had done a Bonanza episode, Kayleetara, it would have been fun to see. I think he did fewer western shows than guys like DeForest Kelley and James Doohan. Shatner was in one episode each of Gunsmoke and The Big Valley, and a couple of segments of The Virginian, among others. He also starred in the short-lived western series Barbary Coast (1975-1976).

Leonard Nimoy did quite a few western guest spots, including Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Rebel, Rawhide and Wagon Train.

A couple of years ago a DVD called Trek Stars Go West (2010) was released. It includes the Bonanza show "The Ape", with Leonard Nimoy.

It was NBC's ratings giant that helped kill Trek and he resented Greene for a bad move on the stock market that caused him to lose money.

I did not realize he had a dislike for Bonanza. I always wondered why he never guested on the show, as he was so active as a guest star on other shows throughout the sixties.

I recall Shatner being in a tribute to Canadian show business personalities in the late 70's where they spoof the Godfather and Greene played the "Godfather" of Canadian actors.

Why would he blame Lorne Greene for something that happened in the Stock Market?

I'm not sure how Bonanza affected Star Trek if they were on NBC together. I remember vaguely Star Trek went to 10 pm on Friday nights. I had to beg to stay up to see it and only got a dispensation because it was on Friday night. I think that was one of the things that killed it, along with some horrible episodes such as "Spock's Brain". Even as a kid, I recognized that was a pretty bad episode.

Though I do remember thinking as Shatner was looking at Greene in "Swing Out"and see Shatner thinking "Damn! Your show was on 7 seasons before mine ever started and mine is now canceled (1970) and your damn show IS still on!" Though Shatner hasn't done too badly for himself over the years, the '70s were the pits for him. Has anyone seen that clip of Shatner doing "Rocket Man" in the '70s?

Incomparable Bill Shatner! Emoting! LOL Is this the Harry Chapin song? A sad song.

I hear echoes of "The Transformed Man" in "Taxi.' I don't think that album is as bad as some say. Though "Lucy in the Sky" is pretty bad.

You"ve probably already found it, but here is "Rocket Man." What WAS in that cigarette?

I've heard Bill Shatner has the best toupee in Hollywood, but it's showing a little around the edges here in Rocket Man. Frankly, I thought Pernell Roberts and Lorne Greene had the best toupees.

Thanks to Rick for letting us indulge our esoteric interests.

Shatner's irish jig is pretty good but I have to agree that Lorne Greene and Pernell Roberts had the best I for one never knew they wore them.so I'm hoping to get one just as good as theirs before my own hair leaves home for good.

I never knew Dan Blocker wore a toupee until many years after the series was over. Of course his gigantic hat was on much of the time.

I recall one of the blooper reels showing Dan taking his hat off and bowing, with no toupee underneath, although the film quality was grainy.
