I think these are the best episodes of the final season in order:

1. HERITAGE OF ANGER...Ben had some strong stories this season, and this is perhaps the strongest one. I like how he gets pulled into the tangled relationship of the ex-con and his wife. And I also like how Ben intervenes to bring down a crooked sheriff. There is a lot of action and some very good characterizations in this one.

2. AMBUSH AT RIO LOBO...This is another Ben story, and I really like he is once again drawn into another couple's drama, because of his willingness to be a good Samaritan. The actress who plays Teresa in this one is outstanding and the villains are good and not too over-the-top like we find in some episodes.

3. THE INITIATION...I've written about this episode in another thread. Teenaged Ron Howard gives a standout performance, and so does Mitch Vogel. The standoff at the end is not to be missed.

4. THE BUCKET DOG...I think there are some deep themes being explored in this episode, and it really requires multiple viewings.

5. THE HUNTER...The last broadcast episode is an example of Michael Landon's writing at its best. It's a very haunting episode, especially the last few moments. The cinematography in this one is excellent.

Misses:

*Most of the episodes that feature Griff are less than stellar by Bonanza standards. I think the character, if given more time, would have developed quite nicely. But in these episodes something is lacking. He really does not have the screen presence the other performers have.

I wish I could go back and edit the previous message. I do want to add 'Stallion' to the best of season 14 comments, to give it an honorable mention. It's a much more personalized story for Joe than 'Forever' was. I love that final scene where Joe sees the horse running wild and free in his mind. Beautifully done. Some of the experimental camera work was a bit overdone during the episode, but it does make everything seem a bit more intimate-- like a window into Joe's soul. The music was most effective. And I thought some of the sequences, like the business of Joe racing the horse against the train was very suspenseful...thanks to some excellent editing. I bet they had fun filming that.

It stinks that the Network wouldn't allow them to make a SERIES FINALE. I hate how it just ends after the episode where Joe is pursued by a crazy hunter
