Lorne Greene must've had a clause in his contract that guaranteed a certain number of episodes per season. He has very minimal screen time in this one and could easily have been written out, with his absence easily explained that he had already gone on his trip. This is a Joe and Hoss episode, with the emphasis more on Joe and special guest star Glenn Corbett as the ex-gunman turned reverend. Corbett is very convincing in his part as a conflicted man of the cloth whose old urges keep coming back and tempt him into a shoot-out with another man. The ambiguity of his character is played to great effect, and the writer has done a nifty job of putting Joe into the heart of the man's drama-- at one point Joe challenges the reverend's opponent in the same way the opponent has been challenging the rev. The scenes that stand out most are the church-building ones. This story stuck in Landon's psyche and years later in a season 8 episode of 'Little House' he has Laura and Almanzo building a new house. Some of the shots look similar to the shots in this episode.

When an actor has a minimum of scenes, and he'll do them and report back the following week. He's put on HOLD. In another example, if the actor has to make a personal appearance, and that applies too. In 9's "GOLD DETECTOR", Lorne had to make a personal appearance in Ohio and they wrote him in a few scenes of the episode.

That's interesting. At first I was wondering if, like Maverick and The Virginian, more than one episode was filmed at a time with two different crews and directors. So maybe Lorne filmed a quick scene for this episode, then went off and made another episode where he was central to the action while Dan and Michael finished this one. I would have to look at the production histories for these episodes. Or maybe it was as simple as needing Ben off-camera, because if Pa was around, the boys would not get into as much trouble.
