The episode with the highest rating at TV.com seems to be the one that is airing today: Joe Cartwright, Detective (from season 8). Most of his scripts were recycled by him for Little House or Highway to Heaven.

Mike was a wonderful television writer. "Joe Cartwright Detective" is very good, but "Forever" and "Kingdom of Fear" were my favorites.

He did recycle some Bonanza stories for Little House. He also wrote some beautiful original scripts for that series, too.

It's been years since I have seen 'Forever,' and I am very much looking forward to it airing on the Encore channel. The detective episode shows his flair for comedy, and even in the more dramatic episodes of Little House that Mike scripted there is always that irreverent sense of humor.

Mike did teleplays and rewrites as they'd come in the 8th season. His first complete script that was approved was "A Dream to Dream" in 1967. The first one that was turned down was "It's a Lot of Bull" right before that. As a writer, he was better than most and matured very quickly.

I think it's interesting that he wrote 'Forever' with Hoss in mind for Dan, but then ended up rewriting it for Joe. I think it works very well as a story for Joe, and I don't think it would have had the same romantic, young love feel to it if Dan had lived and filmed it.

I always enjoy The Gamble from season three in 1962, where it all began for Michael Landon as a writer. He had the story idea, and shared credit for the teleplay with Frank Cleaver.

Lorne, Dan and Pernell all teased "little brother" Michael about his dreams of being a writer, and didn't believe he could do it. He proved them wrong with The Gamble and, as Rick noted, was writing full scripts by 1967.
