I ended up watching a "Big Valley" episode called " a Flock of Trouble". I watched because I thought, "Is that MILTON BERLE?" I did not know he was an actor and he wasn't too bad.

Of course, sheep vs. cattle was a problem in the West and Bonanza had an episode that addressed it as well. (Blood on the Land)

But what really struck me was the bar fight. I think it was Sam the bartender; he must have gone west to Stockton. If so, he made a bad exchange. The Cartwrights always seemed to offer money to repair the damages of the fight. And even though the Barkleys are as rich, or richer than the Cartwrights, nary a word was spoken about reimbursement even though Nick started the fight.

And even Bonanza repeated within itself. "The Flannel Mouth Gun" addressed the topic of range detectives with Adam, and after he left the topic was addressed again with Joe as the main character, though I can't recall the name of the episode.

There are a lot of those situations with common themes.

The mail order bride situation comes to mind, on both Bonanza and The Virginian (and maybe on the Big Valley too), where the guy going out to fetch the bride gets into trouble with the groom-to-be.

John Doucette is the guest star on 2 mail order bride episodes, as the jilted rancher in both cases:

Knight Errant - Bonanza, Season 4

Devil's Masquerade, Big Valley, Season 3
