Subject: Mentions of Adam after he left

I'm curious to know if Adam is ever mentioned after he left the show, and if so, what was said and in what episodes. I'm working on a fanfic, and I'm trying to stay within canon as much as possible. Thaks!

There is an indirect reference to Adam Cartwright and/or Pernell Roberts in "The Spotlight" from season six. Hoss recites Shakespeare ("To be, or not to be") to which Joe responds, "Nah, we got rid of him." This humorous exchange is noted in the episode guide entry for "The Spotlight" here at the Scenery of the Ponderosa site.

There are several direct references to Adam in season seven and beyond. Here are a few from early on in season seven.

"The Brass Box"
Ben agrees to hire Miguel Ortega (Michael Dante) to work at the ranch, telling his Uncle Jose Ortega (Ramon Novarro), "I guess with my son Adam away I could use another hand."

"The Other Son"
Ben mentions (in voice-over narration prior to the opening credits) writing to Adam for advice about a crisis in Virginia City.

"Mighty is the Word"
Mrs Watson (Sue Randall) shows her husband, Reverend Watson (Glenn Corbett) some blueprints and says to him, "Our wedding present from Adam Cartwright. The final plans for the church." She also tells him, "Ben Cartwright practically raised me, and Adam and Hoss are like brothers."

MY later father used to tell me he remembered some reference to Adam being in the Navy. He may have been thinking of Ben, who was a seaman before he moved west.

I still think they should have elected him Senator in his final season and sent him off to Washington.

I agree that Adam Cartwright would have made a fine Senator. For more on the idea check out SWC's second post in the "Quote from Pernell Roberts" thread started by Kayleetara back in 2013. The entire thread is pretty interesting.

Meanwhile, here is another season seven episode that mentions Adam:

"The Unwritten Commandment"
During the pre-credits opening sequence Andy Walker (Wayne Newton) asks Little Joe, "Have you heard anything from Adam?", and Joe replies, "Yeah, yeah got a letter from him last week. He’s in Paris now. He’s going to spend the winter and spring there." Later Andy plays Adam's guitar while singing "Danny Boy".
