Author: Jarrod
Subject: Season 12

S12 is currently airing on Encore. Some of these episodes are really superior in my opinion. I especially liked 'The Love Child,' which I think shows the potential of weekly series television (if shows today were even half as good). It occurred to me that Landon must have been a perfectionist, because all the shots are carefully staged-- especially the one where Will Geer finds out from Ben that his daughter is dying, and the camera goes from a close-up of him holding a coffee cup, and pulls back through the room and out the front door. It's a very devastating moment for that character.

I also like 'The Luck of Pepper Shannon.' Neville Brand does some fine work in this offering. The way he mumbles in pain when Roy is trying to find out how he got shot, and later during the climactic show down in town, where he is gasping for life but holding on long enough to make sure his name is cleared-- it is not overdone at all, but very technically done. There's a close-up of Joe as Brand's character is dying, and it seemed to me that Landon was very impressed. You know it's good acting when the show's leads are impressed, and when the guest star seems to be entertaining not only the viewers but the other performers on camera.

Neville's characterization is even more effective when you think about how he makes you start to sympathize about a villain. In fact, the Pepper Shannon episode reminded me of my deceased grandfather and how much he used to enjoy this program. When the Cartwrights ride off at the end, you feel as if a lesson has been learned (not only by Jamie, but by the audience) and that you have been thoroughly entertained.

Great insights, J. Arguably the show was nowhere near running out of steam as it passed its first decade. It was evolving, yes, but slowing down? No. Let's hope CBSHE puts out ALL the seasons and let us -- the fans -- keep buying each season set so we can have them all.

Ponderosa Pete,
I think the addition of Jamie gives the show new life in S12. We also have Landon coming into his own as a writer-director.

I agree, J. Some purists decry Jamie's addition but I think he's a better character under the circumstances than another good-looking leading man type. And certainly ML's contributions behind the camera were improving with every effort. P. Pete

" Neville Brand guest-stars as Pepper Shannon, a stage robber whose career has been blown up to "heroic" proportions by the dime-novel brigade. Unfortunately, Ben Cartwright's adopted son Jamie idolizes Shannon, who has allowed Jamie to "capture" him to avoid being shot by his enemies. It is only after Shannon is framed for murder that the disillusioned Jamie realizes that his hero is a lily-livered coward. Also in the cast are Walter Brooke as Corey, Dan Tobin as Mills, and Arthur Peterson as Donovan.
