We knew that the Lassiters would not be able to prevent their brother from hanging, but there were some interesting points in this script. First, is it a community's responsibility to extend credit to a starving family and prevent its sons from turning out wild and dangerous? I liked Ben in the role of temporary sheriff while Coffey recuperated, and it reminded me of an earlier episode where Ben subbed as the town judge. But the episode didn't really get interesting until Joe was kidnapped. Suddenly, Ben had to decide if he should set the criminal free to save his son. This was juxtaposed nicely with the increasingly frantic scenes at the Lassiter place where Ma Lassiter (Marie Windsor) saw her best laid plans destroyed by a set of circumstances beyond her control. Of course, after losing another son, she finally sees reason. The final scene, where they parade into town to the sheriff's office, right past a hangman was chilling and left no doubt as to the conclusion that awaited them all.

Roy Jenson went uncredited in this episode that seemed more like a feature film.

Rick :)

Yes, it did have a B-western flavor to it. It easily could've been expanded into a two-parter and repackaged for theatrical release. The presence of Marie Windsor helps elevate it immensely. Tom Drake is barely recognizable from his days as an MGM matinee idol twenty years earlier.
