I think it's interesting that he wrote 'Forever' with Hoss in mind for Dan, but then ended up rewriting it for Joe. I think it works very well as a story for Joe, and I don't think it would have had the same romantic, young love feel to it if Dan had lived and filmed it.

I always enjoy The Gamble from season three in 1962, where it all began for Michael Landon as a writer. He had the story idea, and shared credit for the teleplay with Frank Cleaver.
Lorne, Dan and Pernell all teased "little brother" Michael about his dreams of being a writer, and didn't believe he could do it. He proved them wrong with The Gamble and, as Rick noted, was writing full scripts by 1967.
