Subject: The bears need you on July 24th

THE BEARS ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

A critical meeting has been set up by the DEP and your attendance on behalf
of the bears is VITAL!

The new DEP commissioner has not expressed any pro-bear sentiment and it
looks like 2003 will be the year F&W again tries to institute a bear hunt.

The DEP is gathering public opinion about NJ black bears and we need to show
them that support for the bears is as strong as it was in 2000 and the
majority of NJ residents DO NOT WANT A BEAR HUNT!

1) TO SAVE BEARS, YOUR ATTENDANCE IS REQUESTED:
Public Forum
Sponsored by the DEP and the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife
Wednesday, July 24, 2002
Vernon High School
Route 565, Vernon, NJ
7PM - 9PM

2) In advance of this meeting, PLEASE CALL, FAX and WRITE Bradley Campbell's
office to show your support for the bears:

Bradley M. Campbell
DEP, Commissioner
401 E. State Street
7th Floor, East Wing
PO Box 402
Trenton, NJ 08625-0402
Phone: 609-292-2885
Fax: 609-292-7695

FACTS:
*Bears have never killed anyone in the recorded history of NJ.
*Garbage may attract certain bears, but it does not kill bears, F&W is
killing bears. Most people will not change their behavior. F&W knows this and
they are capitalizing on it. If bears are coming closer to homes, we can
teach people how to co-exist with them peacefully.
*The BEAR Group's Black Bear Hotline is ringing off the hook from people
wanting information on how to live with bears and who are concerned if they
call F&W, the bears will be killed.
*Based upon scientific data, the bears are still recovering from extirpation
by hunting before 1970. Due to their slow reproductive rates, it has taken
over 30 years for the species to rebound. Now, the hunting industry wants to
decimate the population again.
*We need to remind our state government that support for black bears is still
as strong as it was in 2000! The DEP has indicated that we would have to
organize overwhelmingly public support (yes, again) to stop a bear hunt.
*If you are thinking about NOT going to this meeting please reconsider. The
NRA, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and every state hunting group has put out
alerts to their members to attend this meeting. See alerts below.

Increasing Bear Population Spurs Meeting about Safety and the Future of Black
Bears in New Jersey

The dramatically increasing black bear population in New Jersey has created
an environment in which the safety of the citizens could become an issue.
These circumstances have made the Department of Environmental Protection
(DEP) consider its options for dealing with black bears, especially since its
budget has been cut due to falling tax revenues.

The DEP and the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife have scheduled a
public forum in Vernon on Wednesday, July 24th. It will be held at the Vernon
High School off of Route 565 from 7 PM to 9 PM. The DEP Commissioner Bradley
M. Campbell will be in attendance. He will be available to answer questions
and speak to the public about the increasing bear population in New Jersey.
The Division will begin the meeting with a presentation of the history and
future of the black bear in the state.

Sportsmen should attend the meeting. It is a great opportunity to demonstrate
the support and value of a bear hunt as a wildlife management tool. Don’t let
the anti’s drown out effective wildlife management and conservation with
their emotional rhetoric.

This was sent out by the NRA (National Rifle Association)...

On Wednesday, July 24, New Jersey citizens have an extremely important
opportunity to make their voices heard on the New Jersey bear hunt issue. The
New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife and Department of Environmental
Protection are hosting a joint public forum on the bear management issue at
7:00 p.m. in the Vernon High School auditorium in Vernon. For many years, the
hunting of black bear in New Jersey has been prohibited, in large part due to
the efforts of a small but vocal minority of animal activists.

A rapidly shrinking habitat, recent mild winters, and the lack of natural
predators have combined to foster an exploding bear population throughout the
state and, not coincidentally, a disturbing increase in the number of black
bear attacks on humans. Those opposing the possibility of bear hunting in New
Jersey are expected to be in full force at this forum, so it is important
that sportsmen and concerned citizens make a strong and vocal showing!
