Agreed BV,
I did not even address that issue in my posting.

Women hold a very suservient role in traditional PNG society. As indeed they do in most traditional tribal societies. This seems to be beyond the understanding of many western women, living in an emancipated western country. Unless of course, they have witnessed it first hand. The normal reactionof a western woman is to say, "Why do the women stand for it? Why don't they speak up?"

This is of course, presupposing that they live under a democratic system, and can speak up. I find in general that WASPS living in a democracy, (both male and female) make some strange assumptions about other societies. Unless they have lived there for a while.

I would say that the value of a picaninny meri, would traditionally be less than that of a pig. Hope I am not being too harsh there. Things are a changing - but it will take a lot of time yet. Just look at the interpretation of the "democratic vote" the "kolim nem" system.

But despite all that, there are women who have been successful in PNG. Not all that many, and few of them wealthy. Sassy's Mum comes to mind instantly. Lady Carol of course too.

Regards......Ralph.
