Subject: The logging goes on despite all we know

Mr Carr promises that "No trees are going to be cut down and used in this
development" (ABC Radio Fri 3rd May 2002).

If this is true ...

CAN HE EXPLAIN why, if the factory will be fuelled only with waste such as
branches and stumps, the factory site has been specifically designed to
accomodate logging trucks?
(The EIS states on page 8.26 that:
"The internal road network will be arranged such that the need for truck
reversing during normal activities is minimised or eliminated (excluding
day time log truck deliveries that require reversing to reduce the length
of the skid trailers for the return trips"
Logging trucks are designed to carry tree trunks, not branches and stumps).

CAN HE EXPLAIN why this existing Charcoal Plant in Western Australia is
surrounded by thousands of tree trunks?
(The WA plant, run by Simcoa, uses technology similar to the one proposed
for Mogo.

CAN HE EXPLAIN why State Forests employed 16 full time staff last year to
poison redwood species in the SoutEast forest?
(Redwoods are the favoured trees for charcoal production. They have no
other use as either pulp or sawlogs. While State Forests defended the
action as being part of normal forest thinning procedure, they nevertheless
stopped the practice immediately once the public protested. Information
about Tordon poisoning was obtained from NSW State Forests under the
Freedom of Information Act).

CAN HE EXPLAIN how 200,000 tonnes (a year) of "waste" wood can be
guaranteed to Australian Silicon when residue from current logging
operations is estimated at just 85,000 tonnes maximum?
(This is based on information obtained from NSW State Forests under the
Freedom of Information Act).
