Subject: How about China's executions hey?

The United States once again found itself categorised with some of the world's most notorious human rights violators, such as China, Iran and Saudi Arabia, when Amnesty International issued its annual report on the death penalty yesterday.

The report showed that the number of executions worldwide more than doubled in 2001, with 3,048 known cases in 31 countries, compared with 1,457 in 2000. By far the biggest reason for the increase was a ferocious crackdown on crime in China, which led to more than 1,700 people being put to death between April and June alone.

China carried out 2,468 documented executions, making it the world leader by a huge margin. Iran was next, with at least 139 cases, then Saudi Arabia, with 79, and then the United States, which executed 66 people. These four countries accounted for about 90 per cent of the worldwide total.
