Subject: Talk about world police, look at China and the US

Taking a broad swipe at United States claims of human rights abuses, China hit back yesterday by issuing its own report on human rights violations in the US.

Condemning the US for assuming the role of "world judge of human rights", the report says Washington has distorted human rights conditions in many countries including China, "while turning a blind eye to its own human rights-related problems".

The report was issued yesterday by the information office of the State Council, the cabinet office. Running to 10,000 Chinese characters (about 5000 words), it is a largely tit-for-tat retaliation for the US State Department's annual report on human rights in countries around the world. That report came out last week and condemned China for continuing to commit "numerous and serious" rights abuses.

China has issued its counter-report for a number of years. Using information largely culled from US media reports, it focuses this year on law
and order issues, poverty, abuses
of women and children and racial
discrimination.

The report calls on the US "to give up its hegemonic practice of creating confrontation and interfering in the internal affairs of others by exploiting the human rights issue".

"Violence and crimes are a daily occurrence in the US society, where people's life, freedom and personal safety are under serious threat," it says. The high level of gun ownership encourages violence and disregard for human life. The document says a US youth could see 40,000 murder cases and 200,000 other violent acts in the media by the age of 18.

Pointing to 700,000 reported rapes in the US, the report says this highlights the incidence of violence against women. It also notes the unequal distribution of wealth in the US.
