I think it started back when Thatcher was in 10 Downing Street and Reagan was in the White House. Of course it really began long before that, but that's when it first became noticeable here in the US. Not that any politician before that was ever strong on integrity.

Too many people want to get something without doing the work necessary to gain it. I could hand you the Olympic Gold Medal for the Marathon but if you didn't actually run the race and come in first would you want it? Sadly it seems that many would take it and build a trophy case to display it in and act like they earned it.
