This is an example of why Viggo Mortensen should be considered a great actor. He raises the level of a mediocre story.
American Yakuza is a B action film. Viggo is the main character, an FBI agent sent to infiltrate the yakuza, the Japanese underworld in L. A. By saving the life of the head of one family, he works his way into the ranks and becomes the only non-Japanese member of the yakuza - and gets an attractive woman to help him fit in. The action conflict arises from the machinations among the FBI, the yakuza and a mafia family, whose head is played by Michael Nouri.
Pretty standard car chases, gun fights and a swirling camera love scene, but Viggo moves his character beyond the standard by showing the struggle his deception causes him and the feelings of betrayal he knows will result.
This film is no more than average but there's a good performance by Viggo, lots of screen time for him and contrary to Barnaby Marriott's comment, this is a film where he plays the title character.
