This film has 4 excellent actors giving excellent performances. Why haven't more people seen this? If you're a fan of Viggo Mortensen run out and buy this or rent it. Even if you're not a fan, this is a film worth seeing.

This might be considered a chick flick since it centers on Diane Lane as mother in her 30s coming to terms with the sexual freedom of the late 60s and her unfulfilled youth at the same time that her daughter, Anna Paquin, is also facing similar challenges. But freedom and choice is a powerful theme. Lane decides to make that one small step for womenkind by having a passionate affair with Viggo Mortensen's character. She eventually has to decide between her husband, the under-rated Liev Schreiber, and children or sleeping out under the stars with Viggo.

The resolution is too quick but the journey getting there is a pleasure. Lots of nostalgic songs in the soundtrack and, to repeat myself, outstanding acting by the main characters.

Viggo's character, usually described as a hippie blouse salesman, is portrayed as more than just the sexy other guy. He doesn't get the big emotional scenes like the other three, but succeeds in the more difficult role of making his character very real, heart felt and compassionate, as well as very attractive. He is someone who understands the difficult choice which Lane's character faces and cares for her enough to give her the freedom to make that choice.

p.s. There's a picture on the cover of the DVD and video case and another picture at Vince Vaughn's site with Lane wearing a flowered dress making love with bare chested Viggo. The scene isn't in the film. Rats.
