Kevin Spacey always seems to be intelligent in whatever role he plays. I wanted to see this first directorial effort by him and was not disappointed that it shows much of the same intelligence which he usually plays.

This is another film by an actor turned director who is interested in characters and what a range of characters in this film about 3 small time crooks who run into some serious bad luck. They end up taking hostages in a small bar and try to figure out how to escape when the police surround the bar. The film feels and looks like a stage play as we get to learn more about each of the characters. Matt Dillon, Gary Sinise, Faye Dunaway, William Fichtner and the great Emmett Walsh all give good performances in this film.

If you haven't seen this, I recommend it if you like quirky character stories. I don't want to describe too much about Viggo's character lest it spoil the plot. His role isn't big because of the ensemble nature of this film but this was another film in which I didn't know he was in it and didn't recognize him at first. He's wearing glasses and speaking with a French Canadian accent, which threw me off because I find his voice is usually very easy to identify. I didn't have a clue until near the end of the film. I've seen this more than once and even knowing which character he's playing I'm still in awe of how different he appears. This was one of the films I saw years ago which made me ask who is this guy who keeps surprising me and why isn't he better known as major talent?
