I would describe this as a guy movie. Directed by Tony Scott, who also directed the testosterone laden Top Gun, this movie is even lacking the side bar romance element. The story is about a mutiny aboard a submarine. The captain, Gene Hackman, and his executive officer, Denzel Washington, battle over whether to launch a missle and who controls the sub. The suspense is well done. Hackman and Washington flex their acting muscles to advantage. James Ganolfini also does good work as a supply officer on the sub.

Viggo Mortensen plays a key role as the weapons officer aboard the sub. His co-operation is essential to launching the missle. He is caught between his friendship for Washington and his loyalty to Hackman. He shows he can flex his acting muscles along with Hackman and Washington. Viggo's son plays his son in an early scene in this movie.
