lol@ Dilli
It has been a few months since I have seen it, but I really enjoyed it. I think the this movie was a real narrative challenge, as it followed so many different story lines: Gandalf/Balrog, Merry/Pippen, Aragorn/Gimli/Legs, Theoden/Eowyn/Eomer, Saruman/Grima, Gollum/Sam/Frodo and whoever else was in the mix. The action was great, and I thought Gollum was amazing. Every scene with Gollum did exactly what Tolkien did when I read the book: I was disgusted, sympathetic, and hopeful for his redemption.
I was disappointed in a Legolas animation when he does some physically impossible equine gymnastics that looked fake. Also the Wargs. I had pictured them to be much more wolf-like in my mind. I thought the Gimli-is-short bits were overdone here and there, but the children in the audience really seemed to like it. The Ents were a favorite in the book in part because they were so well developed as a species. I liked the movie version, I just wish the marching song to Isengard had been included, and the little poem classifying the hobbits would have been nice too. But then, it really was a long movie already, and maybe it will be in the extended DVD. Hooray for extended DVD's.
I can't wait for part three.
