Subject: Snapshot

The day we arrived, so did the monsoon rains.
Each afternoon, regular as clockwork, the sky
turned on its tap. The magnificent mountains
would peep out from behind a shimmering sheet
of rain. The jungle sighed in relief, quenching
its thirst. People gave up trying to stay dry.
Too hot to wear a mac, too silly to use an
umbrella. We eventually succumbed. An
umbrella was a luxury to the locals. We
left them ours when we left. They smiled.
Meanwhile the street flowed through the village.
Risking scandalised stares, we hitched our skirts
ever higher to avoid the filthy rubbish that swam
nonchalantly by. Giggling at our immodesty, we
would rush ‘home’ before streets became impassable.
Young monks took advantage of a rare bathroom and
showered naked in sunshine, laughing in childlike
abandonment of philosophical study, playing like
otters, refreshed by the monsoon rains. We waded
through liquid streets, lifting our flippers,
shuffling like penguins hampered by their young.
Wind shook the mango trees and the golden
fruit too rained down, cascading into a waterfall
like heavy golden yokes. The rains subsided as
quick as they appeared leaving behind a salmon
sky with the promise of a hot day to follow.
Whispers of fragrant dhoop spiralled upwards ,
clouding the atmosphere of our muddled minds.
Himalayan winds cooled the sun-crazed plains,
parachuting dust clouds, which we wore as burkas.
