I have had several characters on 4L.
Many.
Quite a few.
You might even say, 'Lots'.
They have all (except for the current one, of course) died in exceedingly nasty ways. Many of them have gone hungry.

None of them have ever starved to death.

Since the mud has been moving steadily away from automation, I find it improbable that any kind of automated economy will be instituted. Merchants make money, but not always by selling, and not always to shops. Be creative, your character has the talent backing up what she asks for.

In the end, if you have to beg, there's an interesting character. If you starve, well, you get a whole new bank account and a little more wisdom about how much to spend and how much to hoard.

YMMV - good luck
