Two black shapes, one slightly taller than the other, stalked out of the thick, veiling shadows, one with gleaming pale azure eyes and the other with light jade ones of the same ferocity. The smaller one was obviously a female, looking to be around five or six, and a well-aged five or six, at that. Strength clearly showed in her lean muscles, which rippled under a pelt of soft ebony just beginning to turn grey, and sharp intelligence gleamed in her pale eyes. The second was a large male, raven coat lustrous with youth and without a speck of grey, unlike his companion. A remarkable intelligence showed in his eyes as well, but they were without the immense store of experience and wisdom his mother had yet to share with him.

"Mother," whispered the second, his voice strong and inquisitive, "where are the other wolves? In all the other packs we've visited, the alphas came out right away."

"Shhhh! The land reeks of wolves; the alphas here must be very busy. Remember, Maeron, patience is a virtue."
Her voice was soft and still beautiful, despite the age of its owner. Her howl had drawn many a suitor in her day, and there were still a few wolves out there that would give anything for a chance to be her mate.
