COME ONE, COME ALL, to the very first (that i know of) ANNUAL (well, maybe not every year)INTERNET GENERATED, ESSEX ALUMNI, MULTI-YEAR, OUTDOOR EVENT(that means ALL GRADUATING YEARS and even those that only attended one year are welcome - so graduation is not necessary either!)

The event is to be held on SUNDAY, AUGUST 10TH from 11AM till closing at OAKLEDGE PARK in Burlington (we tried to find a park in Essex, we really did, but there were just too many restrictions!)

We're not asking for money (DONATIONS FOR FUTURE YEARS WILL BE ACCEPTED, BUT ARE NOT NECESSARY!). There will be a fee for parking that is charged by the park and we are asking folks to bring a dish to share and their own drinks (Alcoholic beverages should not be in glass containers) and PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS WILL BE A FAMILY EVENT WITH ALL AGES, INCLUDING YOUNG CHILDREN in attendance.

ACTIVITIES include, but are not limited to: biking (bike path nearby), tennis, swimming (nice beach), Frisbee and ball games, music (an open mic, so bring your instuments and singing voice).

This event is not by wsritten invitation. if you hear about it, it is by word of mouth and/or this website only. Everyone with a connection to ESSEX JUNCTION HIGH SCHOOL is invited!!! We are hoping that the concept will catch on for an annual event and that these will be held in ESSEX.

Hope to see you there and please spread the word!!!

by the way, it would be nice to hear from folks that are planning to attend. We got a core group to help pay for the pavillion at Oakledge, but lately it's hard to tell if anyone is even watching this site...

Hearing from someone, anyone, would help to keep the flame alive here...

Hey Tim, I have been meaning to get back to you, thanks for your recent email. I am planning to visit VT on the weekend of August 10th though quite possibly without the family due to conflicting schedules. I will bring pictures at the very least. I would love to stay through Tuesday to see Brina and Cindy perform, but that may not work. We are starting a large construction project the week before I leave and may want to get back just to satisfy my anxiety. Sometimes I am not very good at recognizing the degree of control that I desire from that which I have.

We are having a beautiful and typical southern morning here in Atlanta. Spent an hour practicing some up the neck breaks for Foggy Mtn Breakdown. Now we are off for a discussion of Arminianisn vs Calvanism. Knowing your a Calvanist, I wish you could join me.

Other than Brina and myself, are any other 75ers attending the Oakledge get-together?

Hi Ken and Tim, I expect there will be other '75 alum attending. I'm doing my best to spread the word.

I need to look at our guest book from last summer's concert. We had quite a few EJHS alumni in attendance, from '70 up to '77, I think. I'll be sure to let them all know about the August 10th Oakledge gathering when I invite them to this year's concert.

It will be fun, and I am looking forward to the beach part as well as just chatting with people and listening to some home-grown music.

Well we were gonna get fancy and make a list of pot-luck items but hey, lets make it simple, just bring a dish, or a food item to share! bring your own drinks and a cooler if you can. i'll bring a few coolers myself, full of ice, so that folks who are visiting don't have to find a cooler.

janice has asked that we be earth friendly and not bring a lot of throw away stuff. this is being urged as a strong suggestion by her. On the other hand, she has rented most of the pavillion herself, so if you bring disposable dinnerware you might have to pay her off! but seriously, we have purposely not sent invitations or gone to any great expense to make this an affordable get together. we will have a donation jar for those who can contribute to the cost of the pavillion and for anyone who wants to help support this website. Let's hope for nice weather for our August 10th event!!

one week away now. so far i've only gotten regrets from folks who won't be coming; not too many people reporting in to say that they are coming so far. it could be a pretty small gathering, but hey, that's ok, we'll make the most of it! do drop in if you learn of this event at the last minute and have nothing better to do.

we may be ahead of our time with an electronically generated alumni party. i may just break the rules and call the free press this week. does anyone need directions???

I'll be showing around 11:00. Not sure what I'm makin' for a dish yet but, whatever it is, you can be assured it'll be a crowd pleaser. Monika has some kinda short gig to play in South Hero in the early afternoon. Also, her mom (Inge) and sister (Astrid) are visiting this weekend. I'm not sure yet what she and her family are doin'.

I gotta be there just to learn Arminianism is. I'm ready.

For those of you who couldn't make it today, we had a small but exuberant crowd show up for our little alumni gathering at Oakledge. If you count the guy named Chris who came by in a power wheelchair and bummed a cigarette, we had 35 people in all who joined our party at the pavilion. 13 of them were Essex alumni; 9 of them were children of alumni and the rest were friends or spouses of alumni. I did not count the large group of picnickers that joined us late in the afternoon to eat their dinner and who got to hear our open mic attendees. Janice wanted me to collect money from them, but I thought it helped fill up the place and so i let them in for free.

I think it was a success considering not one invitation was mailed and the weather was forecast to be partly cloudy with thundershowers. We did get some showers but nothing that lasted too long and the sky opened up and the sun shone for a good part of the day.

I'd like to thank everyone for coming and especially to all the folks who brought instruments and played. Thanks also to my friend Jim Peterson who furnished the P.A. system.

Hey Tim, That was a fun way to get people together. I heard after the fact that the class of '73 held their 30th reunion that same weekend, Friday and Saturday nights, doing the more traditional hotel/dinner type gatherings. I have to say that I stand a much better chance of convincing my husband to join me if it's something more casual and outdoors, like what we did at Oakledge. Thanks for all your organizing and work.

The music sounded so good outdoors. That was a great touch. Mostly, though, I'm impressed by the way you guys know each other and have fun together still. Very nice! There are a lot of good people in your "boysweekend" clan, I think. It will make a gathering of just my own class seem kind of dull (mine would be coming up on their 30th reunion in another two years). Plus, I get a kick out of being the oldest alum at your gatherings!

Thanks again---Brina (back home in Minnesota after almost a month in Vermont)

Well, it was a modest start, but a start nonetheless. i'm really envisioning an even more cross-generational event in the future. If you take all the people alive today who went to school at Essex Junction it would number well over 10,000, I'm sure. From folks in nursing homes to kids from the class of 2003. It's a group with a common thread, Essex Junction, and I think there must be a way to promote this kind of gathering and that it would grow by word of mouth. If you take the diverse group that we had at Oakledge and build on that it would really be an interesting annual gathering. It didn't take a whole lot of planning; people just showed up and brought something to share. I think Janice got most, if not all, of her money back for the pavilion rental.

I think people will still wanna do the traditional, lounge lizard (dj playing music from particular era) kind of thing, but if folks knew there was also an annual outdoor, multi-generational event, then maybe, just maybe they would plan there evening events around it.

It's gonna take a while for this to catch on, I'm sure. Chick says there is an annual Essex event that is connected to the downtown merchants, I forget what he called it, but it sounded like boothes and games on Railroad Avenue and maybe even a parade. It's held sometime in June. If anyone knows more about this (Chick) then please post it here. That might be a good event to work around, or at least to have a presence there and talk up our event if we hold it later in the year.

Joe says he can purchase a new name for our site, ejhsreunion.com, which may be less money and which may help us to be less class specific than our current name. what do people think about this? I've been paying to keep the current site up and running and reimbursing joe for his time managing it (he's also volunteered a lot of his own time). If folks are interested in planning another event then please e-mail me or post a message with your thoughts. If we can get a core group, even half a dozen people, who are interested in keeping this idea going, I don't see it costing anybody more than $20 - $30 per year to change the name and keep the site registered and updated and maybe an occasional picture to keep people coming back.

Again, let me know your thoughts on all of this and thanks for all who have participated here in the past year!
