Subject: Update on 96 cats in Chicago. msg

There was an article in my morning paper about the Siamese cats seized from a home in Kenosha County, WI. Here it is:

Dane County animal rescue organizations quickly stepped in when Kenosha County put out a call for help after it removed 90 cats from a home there. "Everybody is maxed out on cats because this is the time of year for kittens," said Kirsten Kranz, of the Kenosha County Humane Society. "We are just so glad we were able to start placing the cats out right away."

All Creatures Veterinary Hospital in Verona took 27 of the cats and is acting as a clearinghouse for other Dane County rescue groups. Humane societies in Washington and Rock counties each have agreed to take at least 10 of the cats. And several northern Illinois cat rescue groups have taken groups of the cats for eventual adoption.

Kenosha County authorities went to a Kenosha home Tuesday after neighbors complained the home, owned by an elderly couple, smelled strongly of cats. The couple, in their 70s, apparently had adopted several pairs of Siamese cats, in addition to a couple of tabbies. None of the animals had been spayed or neutered.

Although 90 cats have been removed from the house, Kranz said that number is expected to climb to as high as 150 because other cats keep wandering out from the basement or attic of the home, or they ran and hid when humane officers came to the house.

"They just continued to keep breeding," Kranz said of the cats, although she said they were in "remarkable" shape.

Mike Gorman, of the Kenosha Health Department, said the couple hasn't been moved out of the house, which also is in good shape. But, he said, "we are limiting them to 3 cats - all altered - and they have to clean up the place."

Maureen Fox of All Creatures said the cats are "really, really sweet. They are in amazingly good shape and ready to be adopted."

The cat rescue was the first big test for Angel's Wish, an animal rescue organization that has been trying to keep all of the county rescue orgnizations in touch with one another.

The cats are Siamese or Siamese mixes, said Adam Bauknecht, a board member with Angel's Wish. None have socialization problems and all are well fed. Rescue orgnizations not acquainted with Angel's Wish, or individuals interested in the cats can call Angel's Wish at (608)835-3391.

Cats can also be adopted from the Kenosha County Humane Society. "What we really need is financial donations," Kranz said, noting that most of the females are pregnant or nursing kittens. "In a couple of weeks we are going to be drowning in cats again," she said.

Donations can be sent to the Kenosha County Humane Society, 7811 60th Ave., Kenosha, WI 53142.
