Subject: Woody Woodworth's Target Testing Tube

Howdy All, Haven't posted in a while and since things are so slow right now, here's something some of you may have an interest in fabricating.

The person that came up with this method is a true pioneer nuggetshooter from the early days by the name of Woody Woodworth. He's 90 years young now and maybe someday I'll get to meet Woody.

You will need a piece of PVC pipe with an inner dimension of approximately 1.5". Make a cut across the pipe at a 45 degree angle. Now measure the pipe down it's length to a point that when it's buried in the ground at a 45 degree angle, your target depth is what you want it to be when you swing a coil directly overhead. I wanted my target to be 24" down for my maximum depth on a target. I cut my tube at 34" when measured from the top (after angle has been cut)of the longest side. It's best to draw the pattern out on a large piece piece of plywood first!! To lower my target to depth I used a 35mm plastic film container. You can tape the film container to a wooden dowel. If you lay the triangul pattern out on a piece of plywood to get your measurements correct you can then mark your wooden dowel (approximately 1.5" increments)in such a way that you can read the correct depth of your target when the coil is directly over head. "Whew", I hope I haven't confused anyone here :o) This is a bit like describing a spiral staircase without using your hands!! :o) I've used this method to test differant coils and detectors in moderately mineralised ground. By the way, be sure to place an end cap over the lower end of your test tube to keep dirt from pushing up inside your test tube once in place. Also put an end cap over the open end if you want to leave the tube in place for future testing. Keep in mind also that this type of testing IS controversial because there are so many variables that can come into play. These may give different readings for other people while testing the same model and brand of detector. Some of these variables are: hearing ability, different mineralisation conditions, ground wet or dry, wind velosity, hot or cold when testing, type of targets used and probably a dozen more reasons. However I do these tests for my own education. Have fun.
