Back in 1934 when the dollar was deflated it needed
$35 to buy an ounce... up from $20.67... this was a big jump. But gold did not "go up" the dollar "went down."

You could take a silver quarter into Goodman and Tidballs grocery store in Ely Nevada and walk out with a loaf of bread and a quart of milk and 2 copper wheat (or Indian head pennies) in change.

The problem was... who had a quarter... the banks were closed and gold was illegal... So bartering was the "economy." In the big cities like Detroit it was rough.
1932 very bad.. Farmers could not sell their food, it rotted. No money in anyones pocket to spend. Massive unemployment. Worse was the dust bowl and other natural disasters to add to the problem

The WW-1 vets who could "marched" to Washington DC--- and were greeted by being set up in a park.
Surplus field kitchens and other accomidations were initially handed out. But suddenly the situation changed.. The active army was ordered to dispirse the WW-1 veterans.

The vets were seeking the WW-1 "bonus" peomised them. But the Adminstation was unable or unwilling to give the vets the bonus at this time. No agreement, the bonus was needed now"

The active army were ordered to use waterhoses and tear gas
to disperse the vets. However the army had its handsful. The vets were still young. Most were not yet 40 and agile enough to account for themselves. But outnumbered. It was not easy to drive them out of the park.

This was back during the end of President Hoover's administration. Then during President Roosevelt first term the vets got their bonus. As I remember it was about $400 that my dad got and with my grandmother, who came to Ely from Detroit, they pooled their money and paid cash for two small houses in East Ely

No indoor plumbing. One cold water faucet. Heat and hot water was by an old wood range. The house we lived in had a big hole in the corner of one room. My mom put a trunk over it...

Back then in Ely the citizens pulled together. In many ways it was a good time... Every one in my neighborhood had chicken and rabbits. They were able to grow carrots and even
potatoes. Shoes were half-soled, clothes were patched.

I hope we never experience this period again. My grand-mother never again trusted banks and all her life hid her money waiting for a rainy day.
