Hello RSJ... yep that is the rumor. The present MXT (in my opinion) is being challenged by the Minelab X-terra 70. It is a toss-up. I believe it depends on the skill of the user for which is the "best." Also, the availability of a well rounded assortment of accessory coils. and again, the skill of the operator to select the one for the job at hand, be it hunting for coins, jewelry, relics or nuggets.
Also, Randy may have some knowledge of this: there is a rumor regarding a White's PI-type. It may have been or being developed to compete with the nitch that the Garrett Infinum currently fills... White's has the $$$ and may have outsourced for the skill of one of the long-standing (and maybe $$$ struggling) PI-type engineers. This would be a quick way to get up to speed.
