Shane, most "solid" gold nuggets found in CA, AZ, and MT range from 84% to 92% pure, averaging about 88% pure, the "impurities" being mostly silver. Nuggets from some areas in NV may run 50% gold, 50% silver. All of these are still called gold. Natural gold which is less than 50% pure is known as electrum. Quartz specimens containing visible gold are called "gold ore" or "highgrade." There are differing opinions as to how small a "nugget" can be and still be called a "nugget," since the better gold machines on the market can tiny little flakes of gold, which really aren't "nuggets," but we still call 'em such. Hope this helps; HH Jim (WWW.GOLDHUNTER.COM)
