Hi Jim:
I grew up in sunny So. Cal. (I lived in Downey) and this time of year makes me long for some of that warmer weather.

No doubt that mining out doors can be pretty rough in Nevada in the winter. We had some serious problems this ice build up on a heap leach project I did in the early 1980's and that was down in Mineral County at Candelaria (where it should be warmer!). I had heard of the train trapped in the Sierras - it was 1952 or maybe 1951 - both well before my time.

I did not attend the banquet for Peter Vardy's award, but there is a reception this weekend for a new book "Minerals of Nevada" being published by the State Bureau of Mines. I am planning to be there for that. It is a fairly exhaustive coverage of the mineralogy of the state. I got the mineral/rock hound bug as well as the gold bug.

Also, they did finalize the name change for the University, so just like Kennecott Copper, there is no more Mackey School of Mines - its now the College of Earth Sciences and Engineering.

Had you heard that the Robinson Copper/gold propery is being sold to an Australian group that is planning to re-open it next year? Its big news for Ely. Here is a link to the article:

Did you get your ICMJ for December yet? I took the cover shot at Rye Patch (the background shot, not the nuggets in the inset). Thats two covers in the last 3 months for me. I also wrote the article on Rye Patch in the same issue. Its amazing that in spite of how pounded that place is, it continues to yield gold. Its not mentioned in the article, but after I left, the same guy who found the 1/3 ounce nugget while I was there, also found a 1.1 ounce nugget during the same trip. Also not mentioned in the artcle was another guy who found a 1/2+ ounce nugget that same weekend.

Chris
