Hello Steve

Somehow I don't think you are going to receive too many responses to your question about anyone who is seriously using the Fisher Gold Bug-2 as converting to the Gold Strike. The Bug-2 is just the King of the Hill over the Gold Strike when it comes to simplicity, ruggedness, and packaging.

However, as you know Fred Brust did well with his GS at Crow and Garry McMillen in just a short stint earlier this year pulled out at least 16 "tinies" with an early GS and standard 10-inch coil at "Ryepatch," as the area west of Ryepatch Dam north of Lovelock is known.

Over the past 22 or so years this broad "pediment" has been heavily hunted by numerous detectorists using all of the machines. One time, about 1994 I was at Section 17 and could count dozens of detectorists; the same for 19 and 21 and also other even numbered sections including Section 8.

On most days, the locals who are working at one of the mines across the valley can readily count the cars out on the pediment and in many cases even identify the vehicle with a good pair of binoculars.

The point of my mentioning all this is that for anyone to take a machine into the "Ryepatch" area and find gold is a good detectorist and has to be swinging a good VLF-type machine.

However, there are several local detectorists that are also finding small gold at Ryepatch using the Gold Bug-2 with the small coil. I was with one of them in July of this year and within about 2-hours he recovered about 22 small nuggets weighing about 2-pennyweight. But he worked for them; much raking and rock tossing.

Roy Evans in a short time, during a window of time as he was temporarily unemployed due to cutback at Pegasis found slighly over 4-ounces of eluvial placer using both the 10 and 6.5 shoes with his Gold Strike in western Nevada pediment areas.

I bought a Gold Strike from Stapp Mining, with the 10 and 6.5 shoes. I would have given it a tryout in the alkali at "Ryepatch" had the 14-inch been available for it.

Due to the shallow alkali overburden the easy gold has been found. I'm sure you have read both my introduction to "Lunk" and then his short article in the ICMJ just a couple of months ago. It is the PI-type that are punching down through the overburden and into the shales and red oxide to find the big ones. In the western Nevada alkali the Infinium (which I bought from you) is very capable to do so, but at present the 10x14 DD is not sensitive to the smaller stuff and I'm really impressed by the 2100 with a larger coiltek. However my hunting partner Jerry is using a 2200 and the smaller 11-inch circular Coiltek and has found a nice one on the pediment.

You mention a Gold Bug-3; in some ways the LST is sorta a original Gold Bug with a tracking and a full range PRESET ground balance having a small amount of discrimination at zero setting.

Give your dad my best; I guess he is also happily swinging a LST.
