Subject: Infinium test in AZ

Hello All,

I was asked by several folks to do a report on Garrett's new Infinium LS detector after I tried it out. Well I got one on the 16th and did a bit of bench testing before taking it out to the Rich Hill area on Saturday. 14" on a nickel was not a problem, but gold under .4 grams is iffy at best.

I am not going to go into a lot of detail here as most of what I learned has already been posted by Steve H. and others. The Infinium LS with it's 10" X 14" DD coil can be compared to a SD 2100 with a 11" DD coil and they are pretty close. But with a 14" mono my 2100 was both more sensitive on small nuggets and went deeper in air tests.

In the field the Infinium worked quite well and handles the hot soil around Rich Hill in the Weaver Mountains very well. The threshold runs very smooth and target signals are very crisp and easy to hear. The different sound took some getting used to for me though. The discrimination seems to work as stated in the book and Garrett recommends it not be trusted when hunting gold nuggets. I found it fairly dependable on smaller targets, but larger targets good or bad registered as iron. So we are still at "dig all targets" or leave gold behind.

All and All this detector does as Garrett says it will and is a very good PI detector for 1250.00 dollars indeed. It is very user friendly and the basics can be learned very quickly and the operator can be out after nuggets in a short period of time. Because of the ease of operation I am posting my feelings and opinion earlier than planned.

What Garrett has here is a winner for folks wanting a PI detector for nuggets, relics, beach, or under water. As far as folks wanting to replace their SD or GP I would not recommend it at this time. The SD and GP with a large variety Coiltek coils available is still my choice for the Arizona gold fields. As Garrett comes out with the 8" and 10X5" mono coils the Infinium will be more versatile and will compete better with the SD's as I see it. Us fellers with the SDs and GPs are going to have to get used to some competition as this very affordable PI will be out there getting it done!

Comparing the two is not the reason for this short report though and as far as the Infinium LS goes I would recomend it to anyone wanting to own a good PI detector for all around use including prospecting that doesn't want to spend 2000.00 or more. Sorry if anyone was expecting a big write-up with tons of tests, but simply stated the detector does as Garrett says in the user manual.

This is simply my 2 cents worth....

Take care and good hunting...Bill S.
