Subject: Where to start as a beginning prospector

As someone who wants to try gold prospecting parttime and who will not have much time during the year, it would be nice to know which area of the country would be a good place for a beginner. I live halfway between the West and East coasts. Has anyone prospected on both coasts? Would it be better to try in North Carolina or California? There are professional outfits that will take you out for a few days and teach you how to prospect. So which way do I go? Any thoughts?
