Jim,

Wow that's a scary situation! What caused the void underneath the Caliche and how deep was it? Your the first person to ever mention such as I just went thru all the back issues of the California mining Journal starting at 1959 and cut out the good articles. Dr. Heylman wrote a piece on prospecting around hot springs and did say to be carefull approaching the opening as it could collapse and you would be plunged down into the hot water, but Caliche I am at a loss.

I've noticed on the west side of Sand Canyon all along the shallow depth to caliche and after drywashing at the KGB, went metal detecting in that narrow canyon you come to on the left as you turn off Sand Cyn. road and go upwards towards Morman Gulch (in between Dave Wolfes claim "the Red Doggy" and the backside of the "Gold Nugget Claim". I think I may be on to a nugget and spent 45 minutes digging away at this hardpan which looked like decomposing Rand Schist and ran out of time (missed dinner-Cardinal Sin when ya say you'll be home 1/2hr before it,my wife understood though :>) ). The cool part about that narrow canyon is that the ol' timers couldn't fit any machinery in there but a drywasher and so I didn't find one piece of manmade metal period. Not even a bullet, so I was happy as a clam with my Tesero Gold Demon with it's 15" elliptical that is a smooth as silk and wish I'd gone detecting earlier in the day! Have you ever tried there?

Also, I really appreciate the precise directions on a new area to try- God Bless you much for that.

Looking forward to shaking your hand one of these days.

Randy Seden
