Subject: What is your opinion of Ignorance and Apathy ?

Unfortunately, for alot of us it is simply....

"I DON'T KNOW, AND I DON'T CARE"

We sit back in our easy (lazy) chairs, evening after evening, read the paper or see the nightly news, and wonder just what the hell is becoming of our world, our country, our state, and even our own neighbors. If there are problems, "It's none of my business" or "I don't want to get involved". But there we sit, continuing to wonder what has become of things.....

Alot can be said for the old adage "If you aren't part of the solution, then you're part of the problem". We all constantly see things, hear things, or (for some of us) are involved in or the victim of things that directly effect us in our daily lives, in our family lives, in our hobbies, in our churches, in our careers, in our relationships with others, no matter the level involved. We see abuses, disrespect, slandering, theft, lies, and corruption on many levels, but how many of us ever choose to get up off of our lazy butts and speak out or at least TRY to do something about it ? How many use the excuse that "I don't want to lower myself to that level", when in fact, that attitude wreaks of apathy toward the root of the problem to begin with. Not wanting to "lower myself" is just another one of those worn out excuses too many of us use, when deep inside we know that what we are really saying is "I just don't think I'm a big enough person to help overcome the problem" or "I don't want to bring any problems upon myself". Well folks, sometimes that's exactly what we have to do, like it or not.

Sure it's easier to just sit back and be an armchair critic in an attempt to talk the situation to death, or bore others to the point that they really DON'T care. But I can assure you, for those who find themselves in the position of being the victim or the abused, whether individually or via "the system", THEY CARE. While most of us turn a blind eye to the bad in this world, not wanting to get involved, we are in effect condoning such actions. Burying our heads in the sand for the sake of "conformity" or "getting along" is simply a chicken-shit excuse for not standing up to our personal morals or beliefs. It's akin to letting the fox loot the hen house until there is nothing left to loot, and then wondering what the hell happened.

In our society these days, the decay of personal responsibility for one's own actions and one's TRUE responsibilities to others, we wonder just exactly "what is the problem".

WE ARE THE PROBLEM !!!!

Apathy.... simply not giving a damn about the other guy, being worried more about ourselves and "what's in it for us" than the overall effect of the situation at hand is one of the problems.

Ignorance.... or a total disregard for wanting to know or understand the situation and resulting consequences is another.

The metal detecting hobby as a whole is something most all of us are a part of. Each of us has a personal responsibility for helping keep it aboveboard, honest, responsible, open, friendly, and in a "good light" with others in the hobby, and especially so with those outside our hobby who may have limited contact via these forums.

It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to help where we can in exposing and helping "right" the misdeeds of those in this hobby who are involved unethically for what they can take from others.... those in it for the benefit of their personal bank accounts or egos, demeaning and distroying others whom they would consider "enemies".

Most of us here know the routine, and have been involved directly at some point in exactly these types of situations with these types of persons. "Ignoring" them doesn't make them go away. It only serves to strengthen their resolve to take advantage of more people, and continue their deeds on a more wide-spread basis than before.

If you aren't man or woman enough to stand up for your own personal convictions, your own moral or ethical standards, your own sense of right and wrong, then don't sit back in that easy chair of yours complaining about "how things are" in this old world of ours.

For those of you who are not afraid to get involved, I salute you. You know who you are.

For those who choose to stay their course along the path of ignorance and apathy, either be a part of the solution, or continue being a part of the problem.

Just my opinion.

Ralph
