yeah interesting question. The active ingredient in detonators today is called Pentaerythritoltetranitrate (PETN), but I am not sure how long it has been used for. I would imagine that something similar would have been used historiclly. With age PETN changes from a powder to crystals .... this is when it is time to get rid of them because they become very unstable. I too have found the old brass detonators laying around when I have been detecting and I give them a wide bearth, that way I dont have to worry if they are going to explode or not. I have never heard of the old ones going off but to my way of thinking it is better to be safe than sorry.
I had thought of picking them up so no one else comes across them but out in our goldfields it is just so far to any form of medication if anything goes wrong, and if you are working alone, and get hurt, you drive yourself to the nearest hospital.... if you can.
