All of which reminds me of the last time I saw Frankie Ford. He was playing some dive in Baton Rouge where a friend and I stopped in for a cold beer. I'm sure Frankie's name was on the marque outside but I didn't notice it, neither did my friend. Upon entering the joint, and hearing the blast of "Sea Cruise," I knew it couldn't be anyone else. The establishment was about to close and, since Frankie didn't have a car, he asked us for a ride back to New Orleans.

No sooner had we gotten onto the Airline Highway did he start chattering "queen talk." It was amuzing, actually. So, Frankie told a routine of jokes - thank goodness there was no piano on-board - and my friend and I heard a non-stop dissertation of everything from Frankie's resume' to his first high school boyfriend episode. (We went to the same high school in New Orleans - fortunately he was a couple years ahead of me).

When we got to the City, I stopped for one more beer at some all-night dive on Bourbon St. Frankie thanked us for the ride, turned and walked up Bourbon St. dragging his coat behind him like Betty Davis, to some dive built up over a vacent lot.

I heard he is still playing piano in some joint in the Quarter.

Au Revoir, kiddo.
