I feel sorry for Liz because it's obvious that she really wants to be a pop star after her years of indie fame. I don't fault her for that. She is "selling out," but so what? She wants to, and she's wanted to for a while.

My problem with "Liz Phair" is just that, overall, it's not a good album. And I like pop music just as much as I like indie and rock music. It's not that I don't like "Liz Phair" because I feel that she's betraying herself or her fans, but rather just because it's not a strong, memorable album.

There are a few songs I like ("HWC," which is actually an old song of Liz's; "Why Can't I;" "Extraordinary;" and "Little Digger"), but they don't make up for missteps such as the cringe-inducing "Rock Me."

Liz Phair is very capable of writing catchy, hit-worthy songs that are still unique and memorable. She doesn't have to try to sound like Avril Lavigne or any number of forgettable pop "grrls" out there.

So that's why this album disappointed me. Not because Liz wants to go pop, but because she did so pretty poorly. I'm still a huge fan, of course, and I hope that eventually she can fulfill her dream and break into the mainstream successfully. This just wasn't the album to do it.

Katie - Thanks for your kind words. I don't know what I'm more impressed with: your eloquent and mature posts, or the amazing amount of time you spend on the fan page of an arist you seem to hate. Your time might be better spent over on ebay buying a life.
