Subject: honestly....about the entire new album...

i'll prefix this with: i loved the cynical sarcastic wit that is so prevalent on liz phair's album.

i've had the entire album for almost a week now. don't bother asking how i got it, i just do.

it's still liz phair and you can see it in a lot of the lyrics (which none of you probably have, so check them out at http://bliss.its-official.com/cds/lp_adv.html). For instance, read the lyrics to Why Can't I?.

based on some of the other stuff i'm hearing it really sounds like this album is more for HER than YOU. for instance, if you listen to the lyrics of "Little Digger", she totally references the divorce and James playing in a sandbox, telling a prospective lover of Liz's that "that's MY MOMMY".

however, you can clearly see where Capitol Records had their hand in the record with production. the musical aspect is ASS.

please understand that this is a very typical occurence in the music industry when someone goes from a good indie lable like Matador to a mainstream label like Capitol. the artist usually signs a contract and loses ALL the musical freedom they're used to.

i think it would probably help if you people stop being selfish and acting like Liz is "yours" or that you own her. stop and think about what this woman has probably gone through after the divorce, being a single mom, having to learn to date again. she's been singing songs her whole life about what assholes men are and here she settled down with one and this is what she's been left with.

not that men are bad (i am one :) )

but, yeah. dis on the album all you want. if you think you can do better, get on it. but the thought that she's been producing music for YOU all this time is ludicrous.

i must admit though - i hope her contract is short and she heads back to matador soon to cut something better :D

with that said - like...there's still a few songs on there with that same wit (you gotta listen tho :D). have an open mind. you don't hafta like the sound the record label dropped into the album...i'm sure if she had her way it would be what you had previously expected.

what am i trying to say? listen to the lyrics and you'll get a good idea of where she's at in life, what she's going through and possibly even learn the motivation behind the album.

damn typo.

should have proofed that message. typical liz phair shows through in the track H.W.C. (hot white cum). ummm...the lyrics are just as vulgar as you might have heard on any of the other albums.

i dunno.

You guys are depressing me. Is it really that bad? Does anyone out there like it? I wasn't aware that she had switched labels. That would certainly explain a lot. What has Liz herself said about the album?

Just had to come on here and check out what people thought of this album, at least those who heard it. I had it delivered to me yesterday (I write for music mags), and I gotta say I so am disapointed. Man, I fucking love Liz Phair, those early albums are up there will my all-time favourites. And I liked the last one too, took me a while, but I it grew on me a lot....

This, however, is shit. The production is terrible, feel like I'm listening to the soundtrack to American Pie II or something. Yeah, there are a few songs that have that old Liz revealing personal lyricism touch, but they're lost within the mass of comformative song structures, radio-friendly sound, the way too obvious use of Protools... I just feel let down. I hoping this is gonna grow on me to, but I doubt it.

I do think it is really naive, however, as those who wrote above to say that they're sure the sound would have been different if she wasn't on a major. Labels may exude pressure but they don't force people to do what they don't want to; it sounds this way because Liz also wants it to sound this way. The ringing of the cash machine, my friend. It's not like she is an unwitting accomplice along for the ride... this is her vision, her album ultimately.

And that's what is bumming me out.
