It's true. I honestly wish I had never listened to it. No layers of vocals.. no patterns of noise.. no beautiful, imperfect voice.. no fun, witty lyrics. I don't understand.. how did she let this happen?

grow up! Can't she try something different even a little more commercial without people crying about "what happened to the Liz I thought I knew". Ridiculus - Liz - if your listening - ROCK ON!

She can try something "different" or "a little more commercial" but it doesn't have to be any good, nor do we have to like it. If it's no good to her existing fans it's no good, and she'll have to find new fans.
One can only rest on ones laurels so long, especially in rock. Liz has held on to many fans for ten years but I think many of us have reached our limit.

maybe liz doesn't have such an imperfect voice because after 10 years, one would hope that a person's skills IMPROVE. I mean her imperfect voice sure was indy (and sexy) but who's to say she was ever happy with it. And as a side note, I saw her live in NJ a few weeks ago. Live and with a perfectly smooth singing voice. Just like a lot of people fondly remember their crappy college apartments, you still don't want to go back to it.

Re: Devastating Review -- Whitney, 09:46:21 06/25/03 Wed
I like the article, Mel, thanks for posting the link.
By all means, Liz is free to do what she wants. I wouldn't mind a commercial, polished album if it was well done--but this one is just all over the place. The lyrical content is what bugs me even more than the polished production. I mean, Liz is 36, not 16. Sheryl Crow sings glossy pop songs, too, but at least she keeps them in her age group. That's what turns me off the most about this record.
No, Liz is not in the same place she was 10 years ago with "Guyville." Who is? But she appears to have regressed rather than progressed, and that's sad.
What I miss most is her imperfect voice, the flaws, the cracks. I understand that you can't have that if you want to do mainstream pop stuff, but that understanding doesn't stop me from missing it.
I do like a few songs: "HWC," even though the article disses it (I just keep telling myself Liz is being sarcastic, despite evidence to the contrary, lol); "Little Digger;" and "Good Love Never Dies" (again, I'm just imagining Liz being sarcastic...I know it's all in my head). "Red Light Fever" is OK, and I can even stand "Why Can't I?." But songs like "Rock Me" and "Extraordinary"...blech.
I would hate this album coming from ANYONE. Because it's Liz, whom I love, I merely dislike it. But I don't think I'll hold my breath waiting for her next album.

yah. i hear you. i really liked guyville, whipsmart and whitechocolatespaceegg - if you are going to go commercial, at least do it well - although i do like the songs more which liz did not collaborate on.

The CD is good. Not one of her best. You do think to yourself on "Why Can't I": "Liz with all of your outspoken thoughts on music, you didn't tell the Matrix guys to not retread "Complicated?" "Complicated" has been overplayed so much, that I don't think "Why Can't I" will be successful. If Liz Phair wants success, than I don't think we should punish her for it and call her a sellout. I don't think her integrity was compromised on this album just her ability to stand on her own two feet. 5 years is a long time between albums and was this worth the wait? Liz is such a great songwriter that yes it was.

Re: Devastating Review -- Daman, 09:02:27 06/26/03 Thu
some of you guys are nutz. this album is a stroke of genius for Liz. she has accomplished exactly what she wanted to...a fabulous summer album that will surely burn up the charts. if you love "Exile in Guyville" so much (& I do too), then dig it out & listen to it. just because an artist paints a different picture, if doesn't mean you should get offended if you don't love it. who loves all of Picasso's paintings? a lot of them were godawful. at least until you can kinda see the brushstrokes from the eyes of the one who painted them.
