Well I like all of the albums, but Exile in Guyville is definitely a must-have!

there are four official albums; exile in guyville which is her raunchiest, straight-forward alternative style, Juvenilia, which was a smaller release - and a little trickier to get a hold of an original - which also has a lot of her stuff from the girlysound demos, which again is the rougher sound. She also made whipsmart, which some say is her worst album because it is more mainstream than exile. I say that it's easy to be more mainstream anyway, and the lyrics and musicality of whipsmart are beautiful. Even if it is somewhat more pop, it's nowhere near most of the crap top 40 produces. Finally there's whitechocolatespaceegg. Even more people complained that she got too pop-py with this one, but I know lots of people that say this is their favourite Liz Phair album. And I think her lyrics got more and more sophisticated and beautiful with each album, so I don't find wcse a sell-out at all. Anyway, there are also a bunch of bootlegs, most notably girlysounds and rarities, which have a lot of songs off of all 4 of her official releases. The lyrics have changed in a bunch, and most of them are just her and her guitar. I think it's best to save these til after you've gotten into the other ones, so you appreciate these more. Hope that helps

I think whipsmart is the best album. It combines the best qualities of wcse and exile.

Whitechocolatespaceegg is the best ablum so far. She comes off with some real lyrics that can touch anyone soul, and the music is incredible. I can't wait for the new ablum.

I've only heard three Liz Phair CDs so far and I like them all to a certain extent, but when it came to making a tape for my car I discovered that most of my prefered tracks were coming off of Whipsmart. It is a mixed bag without the self-absorption.

i suggest starting at the beginning. exile in guyville is so excellent, and after enjoying the music and lyrics, you can get the next and then the next and enjoy her progression with her music, cause her style does change. exile in guyville is a must-have and in my opinion the only way to start with liz. its raw and rough and if you love it you will love all of it.

I don't think anybody mentioned this, but just go to eBay, and you can find all of Liz's albums for auction starting at about a buck each. Even with the shipping, you're getting a great deal.
