Subject: should I take the first step and ask HIM out?

I like my best friend as more than a friend and I'm not sure how to tell him or whether or not I should. He is one of my best friends so I don't want things to become awkward between us if he doesn't feel the same way. But a few weeks ago some of my friends have told me that they think he is going to ask me out and be patient. I've been waiting and it doesn't seem that he's going to, we see eachother everyday and hang out on weekends so he has had plenty of oppurtunities. I really like him and want him to like me back. There is our school's "spring fling" coming up and a mutual friend told me he wasn't going to go, and then she added that he probably would if he had a date. She then told me that I should ask him to go to it with me, what do you think that I should do? Should I ask him to go with me just as friends? Or as a date?
