The Promise
Daddy can you hear me. It's your daughter remember me, I was with you that night. I was lucky though they didn’t hurt me, but you didn’t Daddy. It may have been ten years but I remember everything about that night. I remember what you were wearing, what you said to me, and even what you smelled like. I’ll never forget it. I was 6, it was a very cold winter night, January 10th to be exact, you took me to go to the toy store. I just had to go to the toy store! We were getting on the train when I heard gunshots. You looked back and told me to run. I was scared Daddy. I didn’t know what to do.
We kept running and running but I couldn’t keep up. You saw that I was behind so you pulled me behind one of the poles and look deep into my eyes, ‘ don’t worry everything’s gonna be okay, just stay here and wait, and everything will be okay.’ You ran off, through the train station. I watched carefully as the men followed. One of them found me. They picked me up and ran after you. I was carried a long way. Finally they put me down, but when I looked up they had a gun to your head. They mumbled something and then they looked right into my eyes the exact same way you did and said to you ‘your punishment is having you daughter watch you die!’ I went to turn away but they pulled my head back.
I then I heard a train coming when I looked up you were on the tracks, I turned back away. Then they put me down and I could hear them running off. And the people just watched you, THEY JUST WATCHED, THEY DIDN’T EVEN TRY TO STOP IT!
Daddy there was one difference between the way you and the man looked into my eyes. The man told the truth. Is everything okay now Daddy is this okay to you? I haven’t seen you in ten years and that’s okay? How could you tell me that everything was gonna be okay how could you lie. Daddy, the promise you didn’t keep, was what split this family apart. If you kept that promise you would have been there for my graduation, but everyone is aloud one mistake right? Daddy you had one mistake to many.
