Subject: Hurricane Escape

My daughter Karen and I were in N.O. prior to Katrina as my son had surgery there on Thursday before. We kept watching the weather reports and waiting to see if it would turn or lessen in intensity. No such luck. We waited til early Sunday morning when it was reported to be Category 5, threw everything in my car and started out for Vicksburg. We had to leave my son in the N.O. hospital; that's another story. Karen and I were in that line of cars inching up I-55 all day Sunday. It took us 10 hrs but we were still ahead of the storm. Believe me, Vicksburg never looked so good!

The storm was rough enough here. We lost some trees in the back yard but nothing fell on the house. Just snatched our power lines down and off the house. Some of Vicksburg is still without electricity. I got power late Sunday night - Joan still has none. The paper reported that we had winds 75 mph and I believe it. One woman was killed at Eagle Lake when a tree fell on her house - the only fatality I know of.

Hope you all are OK. Let us hear from you.
