THE FAN
One

JC was dating a fan. She was an adult, with a job and a house and cats, but she was still a fan. Her name was Lara, she had met JC while they were both sightseeing in New York City, and she lived in Pennsylvania.
Joey thought it was no big deal. He liked his friends to be happy, so if this fan made JC happy, then more power to them. He was the first to meet her, and she made him laugh almost immediately. Joey liked her.
Lance pretty much didn’t care one way or another. He had met Lara as well, and he thought she was nice enough. He had a long talk with JC, however, reminding him of people in their inner circle who had gotten involved with fans and ended up with all kinds of trouble. JC then reminded Lance that he was a grownup and a fairly good judge of character. He politely thanked Lance, then not-so-politely gave him the finger for his condescending attitude.
Chris made no attempt to hide his displeasure. Fans were the girls who you screwed on the side. You didn’t DATE fans. Fans were after your money and your fame. JC pointed out that anyone you dated was a fan, technically, if they at least TRIED to understand and respect your work. Chris told JC to get his head out of the clouds. JC told Chris that he was a bitter old man, and that he could go shove his head up his own ass.
Justin had decided to wait to judge until he had met Lara, but he tended to agree with Chris. It was sometimes hard to see fans as people, when they were yelling and shoving and clawing at your skin. He told JC his opinion, and the hurt on JC’s face floored him. JC glared at his supposed best friend and asked where Justin had gained this sudden experience with relationships. Justin had had only one girlfriend, Britney Spears, and their relationship was NOTHING close to normal. JC then said that Justin should just dump Britney and hook up with Lance, since all the fans knew he and Lance were fucking anyway. Justin didn’t talk to JC for a week.

“Guess what?” Chris asked a week after Justin and JC had fought.
“What?” JC said in a bored tone, pulling on his sandals. He wanted to buy Lara a gift, and Chris was going along “only because I have nothing better to do.”
“Justin and Britney broke up.”
JC froze, sandal in hand. “WHAT?”
“Yup. She couldn’t handle that they never saw each other, so she dumped our boy.” Chris pretended to wipe away a tear.
“Where’d you hear that? The Star? The Enquirer?” JC put on his other sandal.
“From the baby himself. He called this morning.”
“You’re kidding.” JC paused. “I should call and make up or something.”
“Yeah, you should. You said some nasty things to him.”
“I said some nasty things? How about what HE said?” JC sighed. “Of course, you probably TOLD him to say what he said.”
“I did not,” Chris protested. “Let’s go find your little woman a gift.” Chris rolled his eyes.
“You’re a dick,” JC said, but he followed Chris out to his car.

“Hello?”
“It’s JC.”
“Hello, JC,” Justin said.
“Look, man, Chris told me about you and Brit. I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, well, now I can fuck Lance to my heart’s content.”
JC sighed. It was never easy making up with Justin. “I’m sorry, okay? But you hurt my feelings, telling me Lara’s not a person. She’s an amazing person.”
“I never said SHE wasn’t a person. I said…oh, never mind. I’m sorry, too.”
JC’s call waiting beeped. “Hold on, J.” JC flipped over. “Hello?”
“Hi.”
“Lara, hey. I’m on the other line with Justin. He and Britney broke up.” JC knew he could trust her with the information. “Can I call you back?”
“Of course.”
“Okay. Bye.” JC ended the call. “Sorry about that. It was Lara.”
“Oh,” Justin replied.
“So…wanna tell me what happened?” JC asked.
“She just decided that it was too hard. She cares about me, but we’re both too busy.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Me, too, though I’ve kinda seen it coming. The last few times we’ve actually been able to spend time together, she’s been distant.” Justin heaved a huge sigh.
“Hey…I’m flying out to California next week to visit Lara. She’s staying at a friend’s. Come with me. You’ll finally get to meet her.”
“I don’t want to intrude.”
“She won’t care. C’mon, Justin. For me? I want you to meet her.”
“Fine,” Justin sighed.
“Cool. I’ll call and get the tickets. Later.” JC hung up and called Lara back at her friend’s house. “Hey.”
“Hi. How’s Justin?”
“Dealing with it,” JC replied. “Would you mind if he tagged along with me next week?”
“Of course not, as long as I get SOME alone time with you.”
“You know you will,” JC said. “How’s your friend?”
“Shelley? She’s great. We’re having a really good time. I think you’ll really like her.”
“Maybe the four of us could go out for dinner one night,” JC suggested.
“Are you sure? Justin will have to spend an entire evening with TWO fans,” Lara teased. JC had told her of his friends’ reactions to their relationship.
“Too bad. It’ll be good for him, anyway,” JC said.

Lara got off the phone an hour later with a smile on her face. JC was so great. “Hey, Shel?”
“Yeah?” Shelley called from the kitchen. Lara went to the kitchen and sat down.
“JC’s bringing Justin with him next week.”
Shelley stared at Lara. “Not Justin Timberlake.”
“Um, yeah, that would be the Justin,” Lara said, smiling. “Apparently, our boy Justin is suddenly single.” Lara knew the subject would come up, so she didn’t feel too bad telling Shelley.
“We’re not gonna like, um, hang out with him, are we?”
“Shelley, he’s just a human being. I haven’t met him either, so I won’t really be any more ahead of you. JC thought we could all hang out.”
“Wow,” Shelley whispered. Lara arched an eyebrow.
“Not if you’re gonna freak, though.”
“I won’t freak,” Shelley said confidently. “I'll just pass out.”
