Remember the stink bombs you made as a kid? Sure you do. It was so simple back then. The secret ingredient was Iron II (or Ferrous II) Sulfide, maybe from a childhood science kit or snuck out of a chemistry class. The other trick was muriatic acid, but that was just a fancy name for rust remover from the local hardware store.

After that, everything you needed was at your fingertips. You'd mix equal parts water and acid in a glass, and always in that order. Then you'd fill a glass pop bottle to about one-quarter full, and cap it tightly. After folding a quarter-tablespoon of Iron II Sulfide into a tight pouch of newspaper, it was time for a test run. And if the final step (see below) stank up the joint, you knew you had the mixture just right. After running through all the steps once more, you were ready. You had a stink bomb in your pocket.

At ground zero for The Big Stink, you uncapped the bottle, slipped the folded packet of Iron II Sulfide into the acid solution and . . . you disappeared. Outta there. Gone. But definitely not forgotten.
