Subject: Music Forms Our Theology

Everybody loves music. Have you ever noticed how music can influence people? You only have to watch what goes on at a rock concert. I haven't been to one personally, but my kids have.

From the 1950's until the present, you only have to watch the mass hysteria that accompanies the music. The music doesn't have to be violent to cause mood change. Sometimes the lyrics can be very suble, and still influence people.

Take church music for example. This can be very subtle, but nonetheless quite affective.

If you take a careful look at our hymnals, you will be able to see where our focus lies.

Being the music director when the new hymnals were published, I purchased 2. An ordinary binding, and an organ copy. When I received it, I took the time to look it over quite thoroughly. I was more than amazed at what I found.

Many of the hymns had been omitted. This was not an oversite. Many were retained, but with altered lyrics. The hymnal "reflects" the thrust of the church.

If you want to get a better picture of why it has happened, I recommend reading:

ZION'S PRAISES: THE CHANGING CONCEPT OF ZION AS REFLECTED IN THE HYMNS OF THE RESTORATION,by Karen E. Troeh, Restoration Studies IV, copyrighted in 1988, by the Herald Publishing House, Independence, MO

The preface contains the signature of Paul M. Edwards, president, Temple School

This book is probably out of print now, but you should be able to get them at your church library.
