I was wondering what would make a guniea pig die, i left my house for like a week and had my mother in law take care of him, he was acting fine when i left him but he died today, can you possibly tell me why or how this could happen!

I was at school and i had to stay after.. well i got home around 3 and my dad went upstairs and saw that he was dead... well here is what i think what happened to his death because none of us no how/or why he died. We had runout of food for him for a lil while and were feeding him lettuce? can to much of that kill him? and it has been warm here latley then out of the blueit snowed....could he of died because of the change in weather? he just died today and if there are ne other options to why he died i would like to know please.
