I have spent the past five days in Maesai where the majority of the rough Burma rubies are cut. The best stone selector and cutter in the region is Khun Raevat. I spent the days learning and seeing Raevat sort through 1000s of rough rubies. Generally three people evaluate the stone with him. Once a stone is meets his requirements (he sells to Japan and USA - flawless stones) he makes an offer. I watched as he haggled with brokers for stones ranging from 2 ct to 5 ct. all pigeon blood or "cherry on icecream". It was amazing.

He and I selected a 6 ct rough ruby stone. Several of his team evaluated the stone with us. We made an offer and finally settled on US$6,000 for the stone. The stone was cut to 3.3 ct. amazing quality. Khun Ravet charged me only US$100 to cut the stone. The stones value in market speaks for itself.

If you want to learn more about Khun Raevat or the whole process, please feel free to email me at tucson@qinet.net
