Baptism: Show of Faith or Part of the Lord's Plan?
Baptism: What did Jesus say?

What did Jesus say to Nicodemus in St. John chapter 3:5? " Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, He cannot enter in to the Kingdom of God." We can clearly see that both water and Spirit are requirements that have to be fulfilled before a person can enter into the kingdom of God.

What did Jesus command the apostles to do concerning baptism?

Mark 16:16 "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." Jesus is once again giving us the requirement for salvation to take place. We must both believe and be baptized. Baptism is the birth of the water in John 3:5. Obviously if you don't believe you have no reason to get baptized and probably will not be baptized.

How did Jesus instruct the Apostles to baptize?

Matthew 28:19 " Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost." Luke records the same command in his gospel and reveals Christ's name as the name mentioned in Matthew 28:19. Luke 24:47 "And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."

How did the Apostles obey Jesus' Command?

Now we start to see the correct baptismal formula being used. Jesus did not want his apostles to repeat the words of Matthew 28:19, but rather obey the command and baptize in His Name (Jesus). What did Peter do on the Day of Pentecost? Acts 2:37-38 "Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethern, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Next lets take a look at Peter when he was talking to Cornelius. First thing I notice about Cornelius in Acts 10:1-2 is that he was devout man and he feared God. We later notice what Peter instructed him to do. Acts 10:47-48 "Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.." Notice just because Cornelius had lived a good life he still needed to be baptized. Also realize that Peter commanded them to be baptized in the Name of the Lord.

Another great example is Philip preaching to the Ethiopian eunuch. Acts 8:35-38"Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him." Clearly here we see Philip obeying the command that Jesus gave his apostles in Mark 16:16. He made sure the eunuch believed then he baptized him.

Lets take a look at Act 16:25-29. Here Paul and Silas were cast into prison. Then all of the sudden an earthquake caused all the doors to the prison to be opened and every one's bands to be loosed. The Philippian jailer was going to kill him self and Paul told him to "do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Now look at Acts 16:30-33 the Philippian jailer said to Paul and Sila "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (31) "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that wre in his house." Many people will take verse 31 and stop reading, but notice what the jailer did after they spoke to him the word of the Lord. (33) "And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightways." Why did they get baptized the same hour of the night? Why not wait until morning? Because after Paul and Silas told them the gospel, they wanted to obey the gospel.

In conclusion, we can see that Jesus wanted baptism to be part of his plan of salvation. He gave the apostles his commandments. Then, we can follow the apostles through out the Bible and see how they obeyed the Lord's command by preaching repentance and baptism in the Name of Jesus.
